Chapter Eleven
CALEB WAS SOUND ASLEEP when his phone on the nightstand awoke him. Picking it up, he recognized Jordan’s number.
“Caleb? Help! I need your help.” Caleb sat straight up in bed. Help? What? His brain was addled and foggy.
“What is it? Where are you?” He jerked the covers off and rushed to his feet, finding jeans and a pair of socks before putting them on.
“We went out… with friends, drank late at the tavern. We were walking home… It’s only a couple of blocks… and we were jumped and attacked.”
Caleb stilled and shut his eyes. “Are you hurt?” Alarm tinged his voice.
“Yes. They hurt Pedro worse than me. A neighbor heard the commotion and shooed them off. We’re at their house now and we just called the police—”
“Text me the address. I’ll be right there.”
With his keys in hand, Caleb went out his bedroom door and ran up towards the master bedroom.
“Ian? Lynnie?” He banged hard on their door. In a matter of seconds, Ian jerked it open with Kailynn right behind him.
He didn’t waste time with a preamble. “Jordan and Pedro were jumped in town. I’m going out to get them.”
Ian nodded as he turned without a word and Caleb could see him grabbing some clothes to put on. Kailynn started to cry, using her hand to cover her mouth. “No! Oh, my God!” Ian barely stopped for a moment to kiss her head before he followed Caleb without a single word. He was already out the front door when the neighbor’s address came through.
They didn’t say anything to each other and Caleb drove hastily in silence. They pulled into the driveway and found an ambulance and two police cars already there. Jumping out in tandem, they approached the ambulance. Caleb’s heart finally registered the words his brother said. Until that moment, he felt nothing. Numb. Like none of it was real. It couldn’t be real.
Jordan was outside the ambulance and Pedro was inside, being attended to. Two cops spoke to Jordan, who noticed Caleb and stopped talking. “Caleb?” His voice was strained as well as relieved to see him. Caleb saw how tightly strung Jordan was with anxiety and emotions. He turned to the cops and announced, “These are my brother and my brother-in-law.”
They stepped back, allowing Caleb to embrace Jordan. “What happened?” he asked as he let his brother go.
“We were drinking with Manual and Domingo and his cousin, Raphe. You know? Just shooting the shit. It got late, we decided to walk home as we kicked back a few, well, a lot. Anyway, halfway home, these guys surrounded us. Three of them.”
“Three on two?” Caleb questioned, his voice deadly serious.
“Yeah. They grabbed us from behind. I didn’t hear a damn thing. Of course, I wasn’t listening. I wasn’t even aware of where we were, or just barely. Never even considered we could be in any danger.”
“Not a crime to enjoy a Saturday night out drinking,” Caleb’s voice broke in.
Jordan seemed dazed and confused. “One pinned my arms behind my back and they laughed.
